CHRISTIAN FLOW CENTER CELEBRATES 7TH ANNIVERSARY

The Christian FLOW Center, the ministry of the Church of God of Landisville for senior citizens celebrated its 7th anniversary today, FLOW, which stands for Fellowship Outreach Learning Worship, opened its doors in April 2004. The Center features a monthly program of inspiration or education, a devotional time by one of the volunteer staff, table fellowship beforehand with coffee and cookies, a delicious meal, and an informal time following for cards, dominos, other games and conversation.

The Center operates out of the MPR of the Church of God of Landisville, 171 Church Street at 10:00 am on the third Tuesday of each month. In addition to residents of the Hempfield Townships, Landisville and Salunga, the Center now plays host to residents of Conestoga View Retirement Center, Pastor Barry Seller, the Church's Associate Pastor has headed this ministry since its inception along with a FLOW Steering Committee. Sharon Bender is the current Kitchen Chair. Volunteers from the church and the community staff the Center. Carlton Dickafoose of the Philadelphia area is the volunteer who comes from the greatest distance.

LYNN BYERS EXTENDS HER STAY IN HAITI

Lynn Byers, a member of the Church of God of Landisville, has extended her stay as a medical missionary in Haiti. Lynn, a graduate of Hempfield High School and the University of Pittsburgh, has been in that island nation since September 2010. She has worked three short term assignments, including time with a hospital associated with Samaritan's Purse.

Since late fall, Lynn has served at Adventiste Hospital in Port-au-Prince. She will continue to work there as a charge nurse for a vital orthopedics unit. Byers had served another short term assignment in February 2010 immediately following the devastating earthquake that rocked Haiti.

Lynn is the daughter of Dave and Judy Byers of Landisville. A blog written by Byers can be found on the church's web site at www.coglandisville.org.

Have you ever wanted simply to ask God a question? Is there something that makes it difficult for you to live life as an authentic and confident disciple of Jesus Christ? Beginning January 16, 2011, the pastors of the Church of God of Landisville will be addressing five questions that often trouble people in a series called Questioning God. These are the questions people have been asking that they will try to provide helpful answers to from God's Word.

LYNN BYERS TO SHARE HER GOD STORY

Lynn Byers, a member of the Church of God of Landisville, will be with us Sunday morning, December 19, 2010. She will be sharing about her recent experiences in Haiti serving as a medical missionary at Adventist Hospital in Port-au-Prince. Lynn has been in Haiti since September. She was home in the States to renew her visa when the hospital evacuated its foriegn personnel due to recent political unrest. She hopes to return December 26th.

Lynn will speak at both the 8.15 and 10.45 services during the God Stories segment of worship. The church is located near Hempfield High School at 171 Church Street.

OUR NEWEST GOOD NEWS CLUB AND PRESCHOOL GYM

Two very popular children's outreach ministries begin this week.

Our newest Good News Club at Landisville Intermediate Center begins at 4:00 pm. Students can pick up application forms for this after school program in the LIC Office.

Preschool Gym, a community program we offer for preschoolers and their parents begins tomorrow in the MPR at the church at 10:00 am. Play time, fellowship for parents, snacks and a children's Bible story are featured in this one hour program. It is absolutely free and open to the public.

GLOW TO VISIT GAIN AND OTHER BREAKING NEWS

GLOW is our ministry to young ladies grades 4-7. Lisa Kilgore, Stef Sellers, Leah Miller are part of that leadership team. Tonight they will be doing a service project for GAIN - a world missions supply distribution center located in West Hempfield Township.

IGNITE our before school student Bible study at Hempfield High School had 70 kids in attendance, many of them new. We have averaged 68 kids in the first three weeks of this outreach.

Sunday, October 17, 2010 Dr Steve will be finishing his series on authentic disciples with a message "Forgiveness is Not An Option." Our new Choir Director, Mark Rutter brings the adult choir into action at the 8.15 service. At the 10.45 service we will celebrate the ministry of our church camp at Doubling Gap Center, Camp Yolijwa and hear some God stories from the people who were there this year.

Sunday, October 24, 2010 we will be highlighting world missions. Mike and Nathinha Poe, two missionaries we support in Brazil will be sharing stories of the amazing ways God is growing the church in that massive South American nation.

Sunday, October 31, 2010 we will celebrate All Hallow's Eve (Halloween) with a service of remembrance for the "saints" (those ordinary Christians that are everywhere) who went home to be with the Lord in the last year. We will welcome back our Youth Director, Jeremy Moyer from a short term mission trip to Ghana. Dr Steve will be preaching on "Ancient Future of Faith."

BEING THE BEST CHURCH FOR THE COMMUNITY

The Church of God of Landisville is committed to being a church that provides support and encouragement to the Landisville and Hempfield community. The theme this fall is "being the best church for the community." As such the church seeks to provide facility and leadership support to a number of ministries and community groups.

Tuesday evenings the church hosts two Girl Scout troops and a Daisy troop. The Hempfield Junior Cheerleaders are using the MPR of the church as the practice facility as they prepare for major competitions in November. (The church has hosted this group now for four years.) Monday mornings the Moms in Touch group for the Landisville elementary schools gathers at the church.

The church operates the Agape Youth Center and the Christian Flow Center. Under the direction of Karen Haldeman, afterschool programs are offered for high school kids on Mondays and middle schoolers on Thursdays. The Agape Center is preparing to offer parent support groups later this fall. A program for elementary age kids called Agape Kids provides activities on the 2nd and 4th Friday evenings of the month. Lisa Kilgore runs this program.

The Christian Flow Center operates under the leadership of Associate Pastor, Barry Sellers and Sharon Bender. The third Tuesday of each month activities are planned for senior citizens, including superb speakers and an excellent meal.

Hempfield Rec Center, the area Model A Club use the church's MPR. The church also makes its facility available to families from the community for special family events, especially for kids who are part of the church's growing Burn Student Ministry.

This Sunday, September 22, 2010, the Church of God of Landisville will celebrate the first anniversary of our student ministry called BURN. BURN began following the arrival late August 2009 of Jeremy Moyer as the church's new Youth Director. Built around the goal of teaching kids to love God passionately and become leaders and influencers of their generation BURN grew from the church's existing youth group of 12 to over 100 kids. The core of BURN is a highly creative, yet very direct worship gathering on Wednesday evenings at 6:30. More than 50 of those kids attend BURN on a typical Wednesday night throughout the school year. Small groups, retreats and lock-ins, service projects build upon that worship foundation. Last spring 12 of the kids were baptized at a pool party at Hempfield Rec Center.

CHURCH OF GOD COMMISSIONS FIRST STEPHEN MINISTERS

The Church of God of Landisville has commissioned its first class of Stephen Ministers. Stephen Ministers are trained lay persons who provide quality Christian caregiving to people in times of need, crisis and life transitions. They receive 50 hours of training in many aspects of encouragement, counseling, and pastoral care.

The Church of God of Landisville will celebrate Pentecost Sunday with a unique sermon in dialogue between Nick Francis Stephens and Landisville's Lead Pastor, Steve Dunn. Nick (pictured here with his wife Sharon) is starting a new faith community called Mosaic as a part of the 2020 Church Planting Initiative of the Eastern Regional Conference of the Churches of God. This community seeks to connect emerging generations and persons of any religious background or none at all with Jesus Christ in creative and unique ways. LOVE FEAST ON MAUNDY THURSDAY AT CHURCH OF GOD

A Love Feast will be shared at 6:30 on Maundy Thursday, April 1 at the Church of God of Landisville. A Love Feast is a creative worship experience centered around a table and a symbolic meal re-enacting Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples. A "meal" of foods from Jesus' time that represent different aspects of God's salvation is shared along with music, scripture readings, prayer. PALM SUNDAY CELEBRATION - CHURCH OF GOD OF LANDISVILLE

Palm Sunday will be observed at the Church of God of Landisville, March 28 at its 8.15 and 10.45 worship gatherings. The early service has a very traditional flavor with pipe organ and choir. The later service has a high energy, contemporary experience featuring the church's 12 person Worship Band. Palms will be given to all persons attending.

Dr. Steve Dunn will present a message "Into His Nearer Presence" as a part of a three-part series by the pastoral staff called "Bad News, Good News, Greatest News." This is a sermon about what it will be like to be with Christ in heaven. Melissa Fischer, of the Worship Band, will perform "I Can Only Imagine." EVERETT TELLER TO SPEAK AT LANDISVILLE COG

Word has just been received that Everett Teller will be speaking at the Church of God of Landisville on Sunday, April 25, 2010. Teller is the pastor of a growing and high impact Navajo congregation at Tsaile AZ. Tsaile and the Church of God of Landisville are sister congregations within the Churches of God, General Conference. Work and VBS Teams from Landisville have been to Tsaile in 2003, 2006 and 2009. LANDISVILLE CHURCH ASSISTS HAITI

The Church of God of Landisville, a congregation of 250 members, has provided more than $5000 in funds for the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund of the Churches of God, General Conference. The monies will go for medical supplies and other needs for the Pierre Payen Hospital and Clinic. Pierre Payen is a town along the coast between Port-au-Prince and St. Marc's which has been receiving overflow patients from Port as well as caring for the refugees who have fled to the country side. Teams of surgeons and other medical personnel have been working steadily since the disaster, many of them flying in from the US The congregation has a special tie to this medical work. In March 2002 the church sent a team of ten persons to help complete the construction of this hospital.

Note: The couple in the bottom photo is Dr. Vic and Donna Binkley. Since 1975 Dr. and Mrs. Binkley have been dividing their time between Haiti and the US, Dr. Binkley was the principal architect and surgeon for this hospital. Binkley, who has been battling pancreatic cancer for 7 months, died yesterday following a brief inspection trip to Haiti.

A NOT SO SILENT NIGHT AT LANDISVILLE CHURCH OF GOD

The Church of God of Landisville will celebrate Chistmas Eve with two services. The first, at 5.30 is the Children and Their Families Service. This informal service (which is 30 minutes in length) is geared towards young children especially. A re-enactment of the manger scene, readings by children and their parents, and familiar carols are planned. At 7:30 is the traditional Carols and Candlelight Service.
Various members of the church staff will share in readings, music by our organist Lucy Robbins, accompanied by trumpeters Jerry Albright and Jay Miller, solos by Kerri Steel and Sarah Stine (the latter featuring the world premiere of a piece by English composer Lesley Dawes) and the church's adult choir under the direction of Bill Stine will be featured. Dr. Steve Dunn, our lead pastor, will share a brief message "A Not So Silent Night." Childcare is provided at this service only.

At 7:00 pm the church renews the tradition of a Voluntary Concert Flutes, pianos, saxaphone, harps, dulcimers are the featured instruments as members of the congregation share their musical gifts. Featured in this concert are Willshaw Stevens, Lynn Byers, Barb Sutton, Laurie Rogesr, Rich Holmberg, Bill Stine, Lucy Robbins and Kerri Steele.

BURN'S FIRST THANKSGIVING

Our new youth ministry, BURN, had its first Thanksgiving Celebration. Football in the yard, worship in the Agape Center, and a student-prepared meal were among the highlights. Sunday, November 8, 2009 was Pastor Appreciation Sunday at the Church of God of Landisville, 171 Church Street. Worship services focused on the ministry of a pastor, with Roger Fry speaking about the heart and passion of a pastor. A special powerpoint tribute was presented honoring Dr. Stephen Dunn, Lead Pastor and Pastor Barry Sellers, Associate. Flowers were presented to their respective spouses, Dianne and Lori. Lay persons took over all pastoral roles for the day and a special luncheon, attended by more than 100 persons followed.

Dr. Steve Dunn became the Church's Lead Pastor in September 2001-having previously worked on the denominational staff and also serving pastorates in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. He is past president of the Churches of God, General Conference. Currently he serves as Chairman of the Commission on Evangelism for the Eastern Regional Conference.

Pastor Barry Sellers is a second career pastor, having served as the head of the Business Department of Northern Lebanon High School for 25 years. He is a graduate of the ERC's Pastoral Training Institute. Barry began his pastorate in January 2004.
He provides staff direction to the church's Christian FLOW Center for senior citizens and leads an outreach Bible study at Landisville Apartments.

HEMPFIELD JUNIOR CHEERLEADERS

Once again the MPR (Multipurpose Room) at the Church of God of Landisville is the site of bouncing, tumbling, shouting, laughing young ladies. They are the Hempfield Junior Cheerleaders. For 2-3 weeks each November since 2006, the church has opened its doors to these kids, giving them a place to practice as they prepare for their annual competitions. The first year, Heidi Roth (a cheerleader mother and then a new member at LCOG) approached Pastor Barry Sellers, who is the building scheduler, with a dilemma. The girls needed to get ready for competition but there simply was not space at the schools that was available that matched the schedules of the families. Following the church's policy of setting aside 75% of the MPR usage for compatible community groups and church outreach programs, Pastor Barry approached the Property Commission and gained authorization. Now this has become a regular feature of the church's life, as well. The girls will be practicing weekday evens through November 13th and then on to competition. We wish them the best.

LCOG HOSTS CHILD EVANGELISM FELLOWSHIP

Last Thursday evening 50 persons from the greater Lancaster area gathered at the Church of God of Landisville. The purpose was to receive in training in teaching children and engaging in evangelism to children. Child Evangelism Fellowship of Lancaster and its chief trainer Dawn Pry provided the training to persons who work in the Good News Club, afterschool Bible clubs at various schools. The turnout exceeded CEF'S projected enrollment of 30 volunteers. The Church of God of Landisville, which sponsors a Good news Club at Landisville Primary Center and helps staff the schools at Landisville Intermediate Center and at Fulton Elementary in the city--served as host for this training event. A GOOD QUESTION RETURNS

A Good Question returns to Landisville beginning Wednesday, October 21, 2009. This is an open and "safe" discussion for persons who have questions about God, Christianity, the Bible and other spiritual matters. No one will be asked to join anything or decide anything. Led by the Lead Pastor at the Church of God, Dr Steve Dunn--A Good Question seeks to create a safe and respectful atmosphere where people can ask questions that are of concern for them about these spiritual matters.

This is the second go-round for A Good Question. It had a highly successful run last summer and fall at Cafe on Main. This season it meets at the Black Knight Restaurant on Main Street in Landisville. It will be held upstairs on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month beginning at 7:00 pm and concluding around 9:00 pm. PRESCHOOL GYM HAS RETURNED

The popular Preschool Gym program at the Landisville Church of God has returned with the new school year. Under the direction of Lisa Kilgore and Sherri Young, PSG provides an hour of play and companionship for preschool children and their parents.
Now meeting on Wednesdays from 10:00-11:00 Preschool Gym provides a variety of play experiences and toys for little ones in a clean and safe environment in the church's carpeted MPR Room. Mothers (or other-caregivers) accompany the child and are invited to play with their children and network with the other adults. A snack and a brief Bible story concludes each session.

YOUTH MINISTRY AT LCOG

We have a new youth ministry at the Church of God of Landisville. It is called BURN and meets Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 pm in our Agape Youth Center. Under the direction of Jeremy Moyer, BURN seeks to connect kids to God through exciting and creative worship, quality and relevant teaching, and strong, positive relationships. Its goal is to help kids become leaders and influences for their generation with the passion of Christ. afterburn is the discipling component, meeting Sunday nights from 6:00-7:30pm.

Last Friday Burn had a Fun Night to introduce senior highs and junior highs to its ministry. 45 kids attended.

SHARE THE DREAM SUNDAY

Sunday, September 13, 2009 the Church of God of Landisville will experience "Share the Dream Sunday." For well over a year, the church and its leadership have been exploring what future God holds in store for them. Beginning in 2003, that journey took them into the vision of becoming an outward focused church serving the community as God's Spirit leads. Now they see a growing vision to be a "safe place where people encounter a life-transforming message."

Dr. Steve Dunn the church's lead pastor, will begin a four-part series called "Share the Dream" and a new mission statement will be introduced. An intergenerational worship team will lead both services, with the Adult Choir making its season debut. The church's contemporary Worship Band will add music to both the traditional service at 8.15 and the contemporary service at 10.45. People are the community are encouraged to attend and hear the "heart of God for the Church of God of Landisville."

NEW YOUTH DIRECTOR

On August 30, 2009 the Church of God of Landisville introduced its new part-time Youth Director, Jeremy Moyer. Jeremy received is a graduate of the 24-7 Leadership Academy in Colorado Springs CO and is completing a Bachelor in Youth Ministry degree from Freedom Bible College. Last year he served on the student ministry staff at Bridgepoint Church in Woodstock GA.

Jeremy will direct the junior high, senior high and students ministries at Landisville. He will also work on the staff of the church's Agape Youth Center. He states "My heart is to grow students into disciples of Christ who will lead their generation back to the heart of God."

AGAPE CENTER TO OPEN NEXT WEEK

The Agape Center, a youth center at the Church of God of Landisville, reopens next Monday, August 31st to coincide with the opening of school. The Center, under the direction of Karen Haldeman, offers two weekly drop-in days from 3:00-5:00 pm. Mondays is for High School students and Thursdays is for Middle Schoolers. A student ID is required and a registration form must be completed on the first visit. For more information call 898-8144. BECOMING A CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 19

The popular evangelism workshop BECOMING A CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN is being offered at the Church of God of Landisville on Saturday, September 19, 2009. More than 30 people of this congregation have already taken this training experience since 2001. BECOMING A CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN is designed by Mark Mittelberg, Bill Hybels, and Lee Strobel. It focuses on building redemptive relationships in order to share one's faith in inviting and nonthreatening ways. A highly practical workshop it focuses on developing those relationships, learning to tell our story and God's story, and inviting people to let Christ be their Forgiver and Leader.

Dr. Steve Dunn, who has trained more than 100 persons in this ministry will lead the workshop. It runs from 8.30 am-3.30 pm at the church, located at 171 Church Street in Landisville PA (across from the campus of Hempfield High School.) Cost is $10 and will include lunch. This open to the public. Call the church at 898-8144 by September 14th to register.

ASSISTING TSAILE

We will be assisting our Tsaile sister church with a special back to school outreach. Each year they try to assist school children with back-to-school supplies. Each year Pastor Everett Teller and his congregation try to help Navajo school children get off to a good start with adequate school supplies. Tsaile is located on a portion of the Reservation where there is great poverty. In the last year six key families of the congregation had to move to other locations because of the need for work. Such efforts on the part of Pastor Teller and his people help make this congregation an essential part of the community there. This assistance was made possible by a grant from our Commission on Outreach and Evangelism. (Pastor Teller, on the right, is seen here with our Lead Pastor, Dr. Steve Dunn).

WE ARE OFFICIALLY A STEPHEN MINISTRY CHURCH

On July 8, 2009 we officially enrolled as a Stephen Ministry congregation. Stephen Ministry is a high quality and highly efective program for developing and deploying lat care givers in a congregation. The Elders recommended this program out of this year's Dialogues of the Spirit as a way to take our commitment to be a safe place for people in need to a new level. Pastor Barry Sellers, our Associate Pastor and Barb Sutton have just completed a week of intensive training in Pittsburgh. Plans will continue to formulate as the fall begins. We hope to be up and running with trained Stephen Ministers early in 2010.
